Elda Harrington & Silvia Mangialardi

Elda Harrington and Silvia Mangialardi will be reviewing portfolios together. They are Founders and respectively Director and Artistic Director of Encuentros Abiertos – Festival de la Luz, established in 1989. The international photo biennial takes place in 45 cities in Argentina during August and September.
Working in the field of photography since 1984, Elda Harrington is an international curator, photographer, teacher, art dealer, consultant and cultural manager. She has contributed significantly to the career development of many international photographers in the last two decades.
In 1987, she founded Escuela Argentina de Fotografia, the first photography school in Argentina and still the most important school for photography in the country today. She is also the president of Luz Austral Foundation, created in 1999 to promote photography in Argentina and abroad, not least by organising the Encuentros Abiertos.
Elda travels all over the world in her capacity as portfolio reviewer, juror, lecturer and panelist on the subject of contemporary Argentine and Latin American photography. She has organized and curated many independent photographic projects and is consulted by international institutions such as the Photographic Resource Center of Boston University, the Guggenheim Award and FOAM Photography Museum of Amsterdam.

Silvia Mangialardi is active as a curator, lecturer, author, book editor and journalist. She has been in charge of the artistic direction of the Encuentros Arbiertos since 2010 and a member of the Fundación Luz Austral since 1999. Prior to her current position, she was the founder and director of the publishing house Ediciones Fotográficas Argentina. From 1984 to 2012, she was also the director of Fotomundo, an Argentine photography magazine founded in 1966.
Silvia has curated both national and international exhibitions such as Buenos Aires, una Visión Fotográfica, Tango des Porteño, Los Argentinos y el Trabajo, Imágenes de los Argentinos, Mario Giacomelli, and Roland Laboye. She is also the co-curator of the exhibition Argentina Siglo XX.
She is the author of the book Ataúlfo Pérez Aznar: Mar del Plata ¿infierno o paraíso? (Ediciones CMDF2010), which was awarded with the prize for the best book in Latin America. Her texts also accompanies the book Never before Midnight by Adriana Groisman (Ediciones Lariviere), the work of Elda Harrington: Pero en las grietas está Dios que acecha, and Ataulfo Perez Aznar: Algunas Fotos 1979-2009.
As a journalist, Silvia has interviewed many of the most important figures in contemporary photography: Joel Peter Witkin, Ralph Gibson, George Rousse, Larry Fink, Chema Madoz, Rafael Navarro, Martin Parr, Agnes de Gouvion Saint-Cyr, Willy Ronis, Dani Yako, Marcos López, Ataulfo Pérez Aznar, Jack Delano, Eduardo Medici, Sara Facio, and others.
Silvia has coordinated various cultural events, auctions, etc. and has been part of the jury of important provincial, national and international competitions.
